Rio Tinto to expand Pilbara project

Rio Tinto, a multinational mining company, plans expanding its Pilbara iron ore project in Western Australia by a further 10m tonnes a year by the year 2012 to meet increasing demand of the Asians.

The company made a statement that it is going to make an investment of $230m over the expansion facilities at its Dampier Port in Western Australia, which happens to be the company's busiest sector, so that it can rise the production right upto 230m tonnes per annum from the present level of 220m tonnes a year.

The company also plans to increase the production of Pilbara upto 330m tonnes and beyond per annum by the year 2015.

Rio Tinto is the biggest iron ore producer in the world, second only to Vale of Brazil. It has been selling most of its recent production to steel mills in China.

Iron ore an important commodity for Rio Tinto, whose importance in on the rise as both the company and other big miners have profited from record prices.

Rio had declared its plans of spending $790m for expanding its iron ore operations in Western Australia in August, besides a $170m investment on the Simandou iron ore project in Guinea.
