The Japanese companies will pay $225 for a metric ton of high-grade coal during the quarter to September, said the sources who declined to name the companies in agreement. BHP is the major coal supplier for Japanese steel companies.
For the April-June quarter, steel makers such as Nippon Steel Corp. and JFE Steel Corp. of JFE Holdings Inc. had agreed to a 55% hike from the previous contract year ended March for high-grade coal.
